Hot,
humid weather, and record use of electricity can cause electric
shortages in New England. NAE, along with other Massachusetts
utilities may ask for customers to conserve electricity during
a few hot afternoons and early evenings in the coming summer
months. This will maintain our power system reliability. If
a conservation need arises, you may be asked to cut back on
daytime power usage during announced Conservation periods.
The following is an explanation of the energy advisories you
may hear:
Conservation Day: Public appeal to customers
to conserve electricity in anticipation of heavy electricity
demand and unhealthy air quality conditions,
usually during hot and humid weather.
Power Caution: Notification that electric
reserves are lower than normal and steps are being taken
by utility personnel to maintain
the
integrity and reliability of on-line generation and transmission
facilities.
Power Watch: Issued when electricity demand
is high and there is a possible need to reduce system voltage
or implement other measures
to safeguard the region's electricity system. Customers
will be
asked to turn off unnecessary appliances and lights.
Power
Warning: Issued when an IMMEDIATE REDUCTION
of all customers' electricity usage is needed to avoid
overload
of the
electrical system.
For daily information on power supply usage, Independent
System Operator of New England (ISO-New England) maintains
an Internet

These public
appeals have proven to be very effective in reducing
electricity usage during periods of tight
supply
and minimizing
the likelihood of any type of service disruption to
customers. Your participation in these energy saving measures
is
essential in safeguarding the region's electricity
reliability and
integrity. These advisories will be broadcast on local
radio and reported
in area newspapers. |
